Is the iPad like a Wonderbra?

I’ve  gone and done it.  I succumbed to the hype and bought an iPad.  I know I have spent weeks telling anyone that cared to listen that I couldn’t see the purpose of the iPad.  It solves no need. “It does nothing that I can’t do with another device I already have”.  Then again, Apple seems focused on creating products of desire and aspiration, not on technology that solves specific needs.  After several weeks of meetings with people who raved about their iPad, and after an evening in my local with an old buddy (who really should work for Apple...

The Future is Calling

It’s 3pm on Tuesday the 18th of May. I am in a conference room at The Grove in Hertfordshire, attending Zeitgeist, surrounded by the great and the good from the world of business, politics, academia and technology from around the globe. And no -- I’m not quite sure why I was there either! During this session, Evan Davis, the panel moderator, poses a question to Sir Tim Berners Lee, the estimable inventor of the Internet.  Evan asks, “So, Sir Tim - what are you most excited about?. There is hush in the room as everyone hangs expectantly on every word...

Is there an App for that?

How many phones do you carry around with you?  After many years, I have now managed to get it down to one.  Admittedly I am very fortunate to have the superb Nexus One (www.youtube.com/user/GoogleNexusOne) which does everything, and in fact lots more than, I could ask of a mobile device.     But the critical application for me is not that it makes and receives calls, oh no, it’s that it has full internet browser capability.  Let me give you an example why.   I recently spoke at an event which necessitated an overnight stay.  On the morning of the event, I was...

Practise what you preach

I’m not sure about you but I always try to push myself outside my comfort zone every once in a while. It makes me learn and it keeps work and life interesting. That said, there are limits. When I joined Google, I was asked in almost every interview, of which there were many, if I ran marathons. Now I’m not sure if this was asked because of the way I looked or because I needed to be a marathon runner to get the job. Those that know me, know that I am no runner.  But it did cross my mind to give it...

Anytime, anyplace, anywhere - even half way up a French Alp

It’s now back to reality after a fantastic Christmas and New Year break, the latter part of which was spent with friends skiing in the French Alps.  Don’t worry, the irony of returning to the UK in the midst of the most extensive snow fall for decades was not lost on me! That said the skiing was great and the company excellent. I went with a group of friends, a couple of whom are business owners. One of whom had organised the accommodation (yes all sourced and booked online), and very nice it was too, but knowing him as I do,...

The Emperor’s New Clothes

I had the pleasure of speaking at an event dedicated to B2B marketers recently the theme of which was around digital marketing. I spend quite a lot of my time talking with B2B marketers and business owners, at events or in individual meetings, but it is rare that I have seen so much interest in one topic. That topic was social media. The whole room seemed obsessed about how to get out there and start ‘doing social media’. What really surprised me though was not the interest in the latest buzz phrase/‘must do’ marketing solution, but the fact that so many of the...
